Before you get in the water, make sure you know the rules

How To Catch A Wave And Pop Up

Practice your pop up on the sand before you get into the water.

Try and pop up to your feet in one smooth motion.  Getting to your knees first will destabilize you.  Work on getting straight to your feet smoothly. This first video teaches it in multiple steps.  But, you want to learn to do all of this in one smooth motion.  The second video teaches a little smoother technique.  Practice this on the sand until it feels smooth and natural, always ensuring your feet stay along the center line of the board.

Judging Criteria

The SSS uses the same criteria as the WSL.  To get more familiar with how judging works, watch WSL contests.  In the WSL, they drop the highest and lowest scores for each wave. That doesn’t happen in the SSS, but the rest of the concepts in this video apply. Here is a link to the official SSS criteria for longboard and shortboard.
